Our intention is not only to minimize waste but also highlight the unique textures, patterns, and materiality of each piece of stone. By utilizing leftover materials, we significantly reduce waste, lower our carbon footprint, and move towards zero-waste.

Our “Gallery of Imperfections” is a testament to the unique characteristics that define our creations—variations, fissures, and fossils that tell the story of the earth’s ancient history. These natural elements are not flaws but features that make each piece truly one-of-a-kind. In showcasing these imperfections, we emphasize that our products are crafted with nature’s hand, not mass-produced in a factory.

When you choose a Borrowed Earth Object, you’re selecting a piece of art, rich in character, and unlike any other.

FAQS

Stone remnants are the leftover, discarded pieces from our Borrowed Earth Collaborative projects that cannot be fashioned into tiles, bricks, or slabs. As part of our broader sustainability initiative, we reclaim these fragments—pieces that would otherwise be wasted—and transform them into functional, meaningful objects. By giving new life to these remnants, we honor the natural materials and our connection to the earth, reducing waste and promoting a more sustainable design process.

Borrowed Earth sources natural stone from quarries across the world, including regions known for their distinct geological formations like India and Portugal. Each region’s stone carries unique characteristics, shaped by its geological history. Borrowed Earth excels in transforming these diverse materials into dimensional, textured objects. While traditional quarrying often results in wasted material, Borrowed Earth is committed to utilizing 100% of extracted stone, including remnants, to reduce waste and advance responsible stone usage, crafting objects that connect us to the natural world.

Borrowed Earth uses robotic manufacturing to create architectural objects by utilizing advanced computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to create highly detailed and complex designs that would be difficult or impossible to achieve using traditional methods. In the final intervention, each individual piece is obsessed over by our team of skilled craftsmen who, painstakingly hand-finish and smoothen out, using hand brushes the tool marks striations selectively, based on the desired effect of each texture and pattern

Natural variations in stone refer to the differences in color, veining, texture, mineral composition, and the occasional presence of fossils that occur as a result of the stone’s geological formation. These unique characteristics are intrinsic to each piece of stone, giving every Borrowed Earth Object its own identity. The slight differences in appearance, texture, and pattern are not flaws but a reflection of the material’s natural origins, making each piece one-of-a-kind and deeply connected to the earth’s history.

Borrowed Earth Objects serve a wide range of purposes. They can be used as functional serveware, design accents, food styling, sculptures, or even decorative accessories. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted to offer both aesthetic and practical value, allowing you to incorporate a connection to natural materials in your everyday life. Whether for dining, display, or as a collectible design object, these pieces elevate your space and invite reflection on the beauty of the earth’s elements.

Yes, all Borrowed Earth Objects are food safe and leave our premises pre-sealed. To preserve the natural beauty of the stone, we immersion dip seal all our product for 24 hours in the highest quality food grade protective sealant. This approach maintains the wonderful natural look and feel of the stone without covering it with transparent paints or resins.

Follow the following maintenance guidelines to ensure the longevity of your piece:

Important Considerations:

  • Sealant Limitations: While the sealant offers excellent protection, no sealer can make natural stone 100% stain-proof. It acts as a temporary barrier, providing a few hours to clean up spills before they penetrate and cause stains.
  • Immediate Response: It is crucial to act quickly when a staining substance, such as wine or coffee, comes into contact with the stone. Wipe it off as soon as possible to prevent absorption and staining.

Cleaning Do's and Don'ts:

  • Avoid Abrasives: Do not use cleaners that contain abrasive cleansers, ammonia, bleach, acid, or homemade remedies like lemon or vinegar.
  • Specialist Products: For thorough cleaning or difficult marks, use specialist stone cleaning products. To maintain the sealant's effectiveness, you should periodically apply a new coat.

Recommended Cleaning Methods:

  • Soft Cloth and Water: For routine cleaning of stone, wood, and metal surfaces, use a soft cloth with water or a neutral detergent.
  • Specialist Cleaners: If needed, opt for products specifically designed for cleaning natural stone to ensure safety and effectiveness.

By following these guidelines, you can keep your Borrowed Earth products looking beautiful and ensure their longevity. Regular maintenance and proper cleaning will preserve the natural elegance of the stone, wood, and metal elements in your home.
